The kanji character on the outer lid, rendered in sparkling silver, is “bi” (毘, び), which stands for “Bishamonten” (毘沙門天), a Buddhist divinity that is described as "an armor-clad god of warfare or warriors and a punisher of evildoers” (Wikipedia).
